Letters of Recommendation:
Most college applications and scholarship applications request 1-2 letters of recommendation. Collect them at the start of senior year or during the summer before senior year. Make sure you ask teachers, coaches, coordinators of extracurricular activities and other non-family members who know you well to write a letter of recommendation. Also, make sure that they can say a lot of "great" things about you. To request a letter of recommendation, complete the request for and submit it to your recommender. You can also submit a resume with it. See the documents below.

College Essays/Personal Statement:
A college essay or personal statement is needed for most college applications and scholarship applications. An essay provides you with a prompt to write about where as a personal statement allows you to choose your "personal" topic. One to two great personal statements can be re-used/recycled for multiple college and scholarship applications. Make sure you get your essays edited by a teacher, counselor or someone who knows what s/he is doing!

Volunteering and Extracurricular Activities
Whether you have a high GPA or a low-one, most scholarships and colleges look for community service and extracurricular involvement. Volunteer now and keep track of your time and commitment. Join or start a club (starting a club shows leadership!). Scholarships prefer quality involvement over the quantity. This means they'd rather you have been involved in 3 clubs/activities over the last 3 years than to have participated in 5 different activities each year. Remember that sports and working are valuable experiences to include on your applications too!
